The Ulza Reservoir ( Albanian  Liqeni i Ulzës ) is a reservoir in Albania . The dam dams the Mat , the sixth longest river in the country, at an altitude of 129 meters and is located near Ulza . The reservoir lies entirely in the municipality of Mat ( Qark Dibra ) in the north of the Mat landscape on the eastern edge of the Skanderbeg Mountains , which rise between the region and the coast. The town of Burrel  is about six kilometers south of the southeast end of the lake, where the Mat River flows  into the lake.

geography

location

Aerial view of the region from the northwest

The lake is located in the northern area of the wide Mat basin. It covers an area of 13.5 square kilometers at a maximum depth of 54 meters. The coastal mountains rise to the west; The dam was built at the point where the Mat enters the mountains. In the north the landscape merges into the hill country of the Mirdita , in the east the foothills of the central mountains begin. In the hilly area, the lake extends deep into the surrounding area in several long arms. The reservoir target of the lake is around 129  m above sea level. A. The estuary and the dam are about 6.5 kilometers apart as the crow flies. In the middle part there is a narrow point bridged with a footbridge, where the lake is less than 200 meters wide and there is also a small island. On the islet stands the mast of a high-voltage line.

At the end of the 1980s the Hekurudha Shqiptare from Rrëshen to Klos was built on a railway line . The route crossed the lake in the central area; Individual pillars can still be seen from the 400 meter long, never completed bridge. A few years ago a road bridge about 200 meters long was built on the east bank over one of the arms of the lake, creating a direct road connection from Rrëshen to Burrel. The local village of Uraka , located on the northeast bank, is the only settlement directly on the bank next to Ulza on the dam wall.

Regional nature park

The western part of the lake and the mountains in the west, including the entire Shkopet lake, form the Ulza Lake Regional Nature Park . This is 42.06 square kilometers.

Dam and power plant

The Ulza power plant was the first large hydropower plant to be built in Albania.

The Ulza gravity dam is 60 meters high and 260 meters long. It was between two 225  m above sea level. A.  or 257  m above sea level. A.  meter high hills were built, which mark the entrance to a narrow valley soon to be surrounded by significantly higher mountains. The power plant, built with Soviet help, was commissioned in 1957, six years before the Shkopet power plant around ten kilometers downstream. The original name was Hidrocentrali Karl Marks - the facility was named after Karl Marx .

The hydropower plant has four Francis turbines with a total output of 25.2 megawatts.

On January 9, 2013, the Ministry of Economic Affairs declared the Turkish Kürüm Holding to be the winner of the tender, which had been running since December 2012. The company bought the four hydropower plants from Shkopet, Ulza, Bistrica 1 and Bistrica 2 for a value of 109.5 million euros.

As part of a monitoring of the five large dams in northern Albania in the years 2011–2014, financed by Switzerland, a considerable deformation of the dam, which is over 50 years old, was found.
