The Shkopet Reservoir (or Shkopeti Lake, Albanian  Liqeni i Shkopetit ) is a reservoir in Albania . The dam dams the Mat , the sixth longest river in the country, at an altitude of 102 meters and is located upstream at Shkopet . The reservoir is located entirely in the municipality of Mat ( Qark Dibra ) in the mountains north of the capital Tirana , which is about 35 kilometers away (as the crow flies).

lake

The Shkopet reservoir, which extends in a narrow valley, has an area of around six square kilometers. It is about nine kilometers long and extends to the dam of the Ulza reservoir , the uppermost dam on the Mat. The lake is a maximum of 250 meters wide. It has a volume of around 14 million cubic meters.

The SH 6 follows the course of the lake coming from Milot and continues to Burrel .

Dam and power plant

Shkopet hydropower plant building

The Shkopet arch dam is 53 meters high and 90 meters long. It closes a narrow gorge between high rock walls. The power plant, built with Soviet help, went into operation in 1963, six years after the Ulza Dam. The original name was Hidrocentrali Frederik Engels - the facility was named after Friedrich Engels .

The hydropower plant has two Kaplan turbines , each with a capacity of 24 megawatts, in a machine house , which is about 250 meters below the dam at the end of the narrow gorge. The drop height is 35 meters.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the power plant was renewed with international, especially Austrian, support.

On January 9, 2013, the Ministry of Economic Affairs declared the Turkish Kürüm Holding to be the winner of the tender, which had been running since December 2012. The company buys the four hydropower plants from Shkopet, Ulza, Bistrica 1 and Bistrica 2 for a value of 109.5 million euros.
