Umaltolepis is an extinct seed plant of the Umaltolepidiaceae familyand a relative of the ginkgo .
features
The seminal organs have one to two ovules per axis. In Umaltolepis sit below the ovule and at the base of the seed-bearing axis bracts . A cupula , however, is missing.
Together with the seed organs, linear, ribbon-like leaves of the genus Pseudotorellia are found.
distribution
The genus Umaltolepis is known from the Lower Jurassic of Iran, from the Upper Jurassic of the Bureja Basin in Siberia and from the Lower Cretaceous of the Bureja Basin as well as north and northeast China. The leaves of the Morphotaxon Pseudotorellia , which also belong to Umaltolepis, are widespread from the Lower Triassic to the Upper Carboniferous in Eurasia.
Systematics
From Umaltolepis several species have been able to be reconstructed. Zhou (2009) names the following:
- Umaltolepis coleoptera : seed organ from the Lias of Northern Iran, with Pseudotorellia leaves
- Umaltolepis hebeiensis : seed organs from the Lower Cretaceous of Hebei and Liaoning (China)
- Umaltolepis rarinervis : seed organs with Pseudotorellia leaves from the Lower Cretaceous Bureja basin
- Umaltolepis vachrameevii : seed organs with Pseudotorellia leaves from the Upper Jurassic of the Bureja basin.
The type species is Umaltolepis vachrameevii .
