Umar Jambekov

Umar Dschambekow even Umar Dzambekov (* 20th November 1997 in Grozny , Chechnya ) is an Austrian boxer in light heavyweight .

Career

Umar Jambekov and his family fled to Austria before the Chechen war in 2004 , where he was housed in Hadersdorf chambers . In his childhood he practiced several sports such as judo and weight training, including winning the gold medal at the Austrian championships in all-around competitions in 2006 (class: pupil C).

He later devoted himself to boxing and became Austrian junior middleweight champion in 2013. In 2015 he won the gold medal at the Chemnitz Cup in Germany , the silver medal at the Julius Torma tournament in the Czech Republic , and in 2016 a bronze medal at the Ústí nad Labem tournament, which is also held in the Czech Republic.

He has been training at the Bounce boxing club in Vienna since April 2016 and won the international Dolomites Cup in Austria that same year and the Chemnitz Cup in Germany again in 2017. Since 2017 he has also been boxing in the German Bundesliga for the Berlin club Hertha BSC , which became runner-up in 2017.

On August 22, 2018, he received Austrian citizenship. Dschambekow is Austrian light heavyweight champion in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, where he was named the best boxer of the championships.

In 2018 he reached fifth place at the EU championships in Spain , won bronze at the Ahmet Cömert Tournament in Turkey and gold at the Tammer tournament in Finland .

At the István Memorial 2019 tournament in Hungary , he won silver after losing to Pawel Siljagin in the final . At the U22 European Championships in Russia in 2019 , he was disqualified for looking up and was eliminated without a medal. At the 2019 European Games in Minsk , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Benjamin Whittaker .

At the 2019 World Championships in Yekaterinburg , he defeated the Japanese Ren Umemura in the first preliminary round and the US Atif Oberlton in the second preliminary round, this duel being chosen as the fight of the day by the world association. Oberlton was the 2018 National Golden Glove Champion. Through this success, Jambekov was the first Austrian boxer since 1999 to move into a World Cup round of 16, where he was eliminated with a split point decision against the Azerbaijani European champion Loren Alfonso Dominguez.
