Umrao Jaan ( Urdu : امراؤ جان, Hindi : उमराव जान) is a1981 Bollywood film by Muzaffar Ali . It is based on the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada by Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa from 1899, who was a famous courtesan from Lucknow thematized.

In 1840 a young Muslim girl named Amiran was kidnapped in Faizabad by neighbor Daroga Dilawar and sold to Khanum Jaan, who owns a brothel. There girls are trained to become prostitutes. Amiran, who now bears the name Umrao Jaan, also learns to read, write, dance, sing and interact with rich men there. She is no ordinary courtesan. She is a cultured woman who knows how to cast a spell over men.
The now grown-up Umrao meets Nawab Sultan and the two fall in love. Sultan wants to lead them into an honorable life. Umrao's broken heart is left behind.
Finally, Faiz Ali, a bandit leader, wins her heart. She escapes with him in the hope of marrying him and leaving the life in the brothel behind. But her lover is killed by the police and she has no choice but to return to her old life.
Soon Lucknow by the British attacked and the local people, as well as Umrao Jaan, are forced to flee. Umrao realizes that they have ended up in Faizabad, their hometown. Umrao was very young when she was kidnapped, so she forgot everything. But now old memories come up in her.
Afterwards she meets her mother and her younger brother who thought she was long dead. Her mother wants to bring Umrao back into the family, but he forbids Umrao's brother. Umrao is tainted and doesn't have to embarrass the family and make it a mockery of society.
Ultimately, Umrao Jaan is left with nothing but her art of seduction and her poetry.
Soundtrack
The music for the film was composed by Mohammed Zahur Khayyam . The lyrics are from the Urdu poet Shahryar . The most successful songs were the ghazals Dil cheez kya hai and In ankhon ki masti sung by Asha Bhosle . For this soundtrack, Khayyam received important awards.
