The Independent State of Montenegro (also Kingdom of Montenegro , Montenegrin Краљевина Црна Гора Kraljevina Crna Gora ) was a puppet state under Italian protectorate during World War II , and from 1943 under German occupation. The capital was Cetinje . The state existed from 1941 to 1944.
It was initially administered by governors from Italy, and then by governors from the German Empire during the German occupation . The currency was the Italian lira and from 1943 the German Reichsmark .
development
When the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was occupied by German troops on May 5, 1941 , troops from the fascist Kingdom of Italy marched into the territory of Montenegro . An attempt was made to install an independent kingdom under the Petrović dynasty , but this failed because Prince Michael, who was the head of the dynasty, renounced the title of king. Therefore, the pro-Italian " National Committee " met until 1943 under Prime Minister Blažo Đukanović , who was shot by Tito partisans in Ostrog in October 1943 . After Italy signed an armistice with the Allies in September 1943, the country was occupied by Germany until 1944.
