The district of Unakoti is a district in the Indian state of Tripura . The administrative seat is the city of Kailashahar .
geography
The district of Unakoti is located in northern Tripura on the border with Bangladesh . The area of the district is 687 square kilometers. Neighboring districts are North Tripura in the east and Dhalai in the south. In the west and north the district borders on India's neighboring state Bangladesh.
history
The district was created when the administrative areas of Tripura were redistributed on January 21, 2012 from the RD blocks Gournagar, Pencharthal and Kumarghat and the cities of Kailashahar and Kumarghat from the western areas of the previous North Tripura district .
population
According to the 2011 census, the Unakoti district has 276,506 inhabitants. With 403 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is very densely populated. Of the 276,506 residents, 235,676 people (85.23 percent) lived in rural communities and 40,830 people in urban areas.
The district of Unakoti belongs to the areas of Tripura that are populated in large numbers by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They included (2011) 62,320 people (22.54 percent of the district's population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered only 54,414 people in 2011 (19.68 percent of the district's population).
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Unakoti district has been growing rapidly for decades. The 2001 Indian census found a population of 231,769 people. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was more than 19 percent (19.30%). In those ten years the population increased by more than 44,000 people.
Significant places
There are two urban settlements in the district with the district capital Kailashahar and Kumarghat. Statistically, however, Fatikroy is also considered a city (census towns).
District population by gender
Of the 276,506 residents, 140,210 (50.71 percent) were male and 136,296 female. This is atypical for India, where there is usually a significantly larger number of men.
District population by language
A clear majority - 69.25 percent - of the total population of the Unakoti district speaks Bengali. This is followed by the Tripura language Kokborok with 23,812 (8.61 percent) and Chakma with 22,008 (7.96 percent). Another important language is Bishnupriya Manipuri with 11,166 speakers (4.04 percent). Hindi is only spoken by a small minority of immigrants. Almost the entire population of the cities of Kailashahar and Kumarghat speaks Bengali. The Chakma in the RD Blocks Kumarghat and Pencharthal are of regional importance with 2,162 (2.42 percent of the population) and 19,434 (45.04 percent of the population) members, respectively. The Kokborok are a significant minority in all three RD blocks. They have the highest proportion in the RD Block Kumarghat with 12,432 of 89,190 inhabitants (13.94 percent). Bishnupriya Manipur speakers are found almost exclusively in the RD blocks Gournagar and Kumarghat. Of the 4,938 Hindi-speaking residents, 3,076 (62.29 percent) live in the RD Block Gournagar.

Population of the district by confession
The majority of the residents profess Hinduism. The majority of Bengali and Hindi speakers belong to their appendix. A minority among the Bengalis profess Islam. Most Muslims live in the RD Block Gournagar, where they make up 37,524 of 108,711 residents, 34.52 percent of the population. The Buddhists are found almost entirely under the Chakma. The majority of them live in the RD Block Pencharthal, where with 19,643 members they make up 45.53 percent of the population. The Christian population lives almost entirely in the RD blocks Kumarghat and Pencharthal. Buddhists, Christians and Muslims form locally and regionally significant religious minorities. education
The goal of full literacy is within reach. Of the 239,005 people aged seven and over, 207,721 (86.91 percent) can read and write. Literacy is well above the Indian average.

With Kailashahar and Kumarghat, the new district has two sub-divisions (subdistricts), which are divided into the four RD blocks Gournagar and Chandipur (Kailashahar) as well as Kumarghat and Pencharthal (Kumarghat).
