The Sipahijala District is a district in the Indian state of Tripura . The administrative seat is the city of Bishramganj .

geography

The district of Sipahijala is located in western Tripura on the border with Bangladesh . The area of ​​the district is 1043 square kilometers. Neighboring districts are West Tripura in the north, Khowai in the north-east, Gomati in the east and South Tripura in the south. In the west and northwest, the district borders on India's neighboring state, Bangladesh.

history

The district was created when the administrative areas of Tripura were redistributed on January 21, 2012 from the RD blocks Bishalgarh, Boxanagar, Jampuijala, Kathalia and Melagarh and the cities of Bishalgarh and Sonamura from the southern areas of the previous district of West Tripura .

According to the 2011 census, the Sipahijala district has 479,975 inhabitants. With 282 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is very densely populated. Of the 479,975 residents, 430,629 people (89.72 percent) live in rural communities and 49,346 people in urban areas.

The district of Sipahijala belongs to the areas of India in which numerous members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ) settle. (2011) 115,811 people (24.13 percent of the district's population) were among them. In 2011, 82,557 people (17.20 percent of the district's population) belonged to the Dalit ( scheduled castes ).

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Sipahijala district has been growing rapidly for decades. The 2001 Indian census found a population of 426,541 people. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was more than 12 percent (12.52%). In those ten years the population increased by more than 53,000 people.

There are two urban settlements in the district with the district capital Bishalgarh and Sonamura. Statistically, however, Chandigarh and Gakulnagar are also considered cities (so-called census towns).

Of the 479,975 residents, 245,875 (51.22 percent) were male and 234,100 were female. This is typical of India, where there is usually a significant increase in men.

District population by language

A clear majority of the population speaks Bengali as their mother tongue. In the cities it is even over 90 percent. The Tripura language Kokborok dominates only in the RD block Jamuijila. The few Hindi-speaking residents mostly live in RD Bishalgarh and Melagarh. The Mongs are mostly at home in the RD blocks Jampuijala and Melagarh. Population of the district by confession

The majority of the residents profess Hinduism. The majority of Bengali and Hindi speakers belong to their appendix. A minority among the Bengalis profess Islam. The majority of Christians belong to the “scheduled tribes” (tribal population) and the Dalit (also “untouchables”, casteless). In the RD Block Boxanagar, the Muslims are even in the majority. education

The goal of full literacy is within reach. Of the 420,862 people aged seven and over, 356,367 (84.68 percent) can read and write. Literacy is well above the Indian average.

With Bishalgarh, Jampuijala and Sonamura, the new district has three sub-divisions (subdistricts), which are divided into the seven RD blocks Bishalgarh, Boxanagar, Charilam, Jampuijala, Kathalia, Mohanbhog and Nalchar.
