The Khowai district is a district in the Indian state of Tripura . The administrative seat is the city of Bishramganj .
geography
The Khowai district is located in the western half of Tripura on the border with Bangladesh . The area of the district is 1377 square kilometers. Neighboring districts are the districts of Dhalai in the east and south-east, Gomati in the south, Sipahijala in the south-west and West Tripura in the west. In the north, the district borders on India's neighboring state, Bangladesh.
history
The district was created when the administrative areas of Tripura were redistributed on January 21, 2012 from the RD blocks Kalyanpur, Khowai, Mungiakumi, Padmabil, Teliamura and Tulashikar as well as the cities of Khowai and Teliamura from the eastern areas of the former West Tripura district .

According to the 2011 census, the Khowai district has 327,564 inhabitants. With 238 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is densely populated. Of the 327,564 residents, 288,006 people (87.92 percent) live in rural communities and 39,558 people in urban areas.
The Khowai district is one of the areas of India in which numerous members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ) settle. They included (2011) 139,537 people (42.60 percent of the district's population). In 2011, 63,062 people (19.25 percent of the district's population) belonged to the Dalit ( scheduled castes ).
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Khowai district has been growing rapidly for decades. The 2001 Indian census found a population of 293,602 people. The increase between 2001 and 2011 was almost 12 percent (11.57%). In these ten years the population increased by around 34,000 people.

There are two urban settlements in the district with the district capital Khowai and Teliamura.
District population by gender
Of the 327,564 residents, 167,401 (51.10 percent) were male and 160,163 female. This is typical of India, where there is usually a significant increase in men.
District population by language
A small majority of the population speaks Bengali as their mother tongue. In the cities it is even over 90 percent. In addition, almost 40 percent of the district's population speak the Tripura language Kokborok. Taken together, around nine out of ten residents speak one of the two languages. Population of the district by confession
The residents are almost entirely Hindu. The majority of Bengali and Hindi speakers belong to their appendix. A small minority among the Bengalis profess Islam. The majority of Christians belong to the “scheduled tribes” (tribal population) and the Dalit (also “untouchables”, casteless). education
The goal of full literacy is within reach. Of the 288,905 people aged seven and over, 253,591 (87.78 percent) can read and write. Literacy is well above the Indian average.
administration
The new district has two sub-divisions (sub-districts) with Khowai and Teliamura. These are divided into six RD blocks and two Municipal Councils. The sub-division Khowai consists of the RD blocks Khowai, Padmabil and Tulasikhar and the city assembly Khowai, the sub-division Teliamura consists of the RD blocks Kalyanpur, Mungiakumi and Teliamura and the city assembly Teliamura.
