The North Tripura District is a district in the Indian state of Tripura . The administrative seat is the city of Dharmanagar .

geography

The North Tripura district is located in the east of Tripura on the border with Bangladesh . The area of ​​the district is 1422 square kilometers. Neighbors are the states of Assam in the northeast and Mizoram in the southeast. Neighboring districts are the Unakoti and Dhalai districts in the west. In the south and north the district borders on India's neighboring state Bangladesh.

history

The district was created in its current form when the administrative areas of Tripura were redistributed on January 21, 2012. The RD Blocks Gournagar, Pencharthal and Kumarghat and the cities of Kailashahar and Kumarghat split off from the then North Tripura district.

According to the 2011 census, North Tripura district has a population of 417,441. With 294 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is very densely populated. Of the 417,441 residents, 337,986 people (80.97 percent) live in rural communities and 79,455 people in urban areas.

The North Tripura district is one of the areas of India that are populated in large numbers by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). (2011) 117,106 people (28.05 percent of the district's population) were among them. In 2011, the Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered 60,554 people (14.53 percent of the district's population).

Of the 417,441 residents, 212,650 (50.94 percent) were male and 204,791 female. This is atypical for India, where there is usually a significantly larger number of men.

District population by language

A clear majority - 65.43 percent - of the total population of North Tripura District speaks Bengali. This is followed by the Tripura languages ​​Kokborok and Reang with 73,304 (17.56 percent) and 17,056 (4.09 percent) of the population, respectively. With Chakma with 10,165 (2.44 percent) there is another language that is spoken by more than 10,000 people. Another important language is Halam with 6948 speakers (1.66 percent). Hindi is only spoken by a small minority of immigrants. Almost the entire population of Dharmanagar city speaks Bengali. Kokborok is of regional importance. In the three RD blocks of Kumarghat and Pencharthal with 2162 (2.42 percent of the population) and 19,434 (45.04 percent of the population) members, respectively. The Kokborok are a significant minority in all four RD blocks. In the two RD blocks Damchhara and Das, it even forms the majority of the population. Reang is strongly represented in the three RD blocks Damchhara, Dasda and Jampuii Hills. The majority of the Champa and Halam only matter in one RD block. The Chakma make up 9,344 of the 102,037 residents (or 9.16 percent) in the RD block Dasda, the Halam 4603 of the 111,565 residents (4.12 percent) of the RD block Panisagar. Of the 6544 Hindi-speaking residents, around 70 percent live in the RD blocks Kadamtal and Panisagar.

Population of the district by confession

The majority of the residents profess Hinduism. The majority of Bengali and Hindi speakers belong to their appendix. A minority among the Bengalis profess Islam. Most Muslims live mainly in the RD blocks of Kadamtala and Panisagar, where with 43,093 and 15,127 members, they make up 34.95 percent and 13.56 percent of the population, respectively. The Buddhists are found almost entirely under the Chakma. The majority of them live in RD Blocks Dasda, where they make up 10.45 percent of the population with 10,664 of 102,037 residents. The Christian population is strongly represented everywhere with the exception of the main town and the RD block Kadamtala. In the RD Block Jampuii Hills they even make up the majority of the population (64.62 percent) with 7955 of 12,311 residents. Christians are particularly well represented among the “scheduled tribes”. Buddhists, Christians and Muslims form locally and regionally significant religious minorities. education

The goal of full literacy is within reach. Of the 360,499 people aged seven and over, 312,681 (86.74 percent) can read and write. Literacy is well above the Indian average.

administration

With Dharmanagar, Kanchanpur and Panisagar, the new district has three sub-divisions (subdistricts), which in turn are divided into the eight RD blocks Kadamtala, Jubrajnagar, Kalacherra, Laljuri, Panisagar, Damchhara, Dasda and Jampui Hills.
