Uncarina abbreviata is a species of plant in the genus Uncarina in the sesame family (Pedaliaceae).

description

Uncarina abbreviata grows as a small tree with a densely branched crown and reaches a height of 5 meters. The approximately triangular, full-margined or with 3 to 5 or rarely up to 7 indicated lobes provided leaf blade is 6 to 8 inches long and 5 to 7 inches wide. The leaf margin is slightly curved and the water glands are easily recognizable. The green top of the leaf is only slightly hairy and there are only a few mucous glands with a square head → excretory tissue . The underside of the leaf is colored gray-green due to the numerous mucous glands with a star-shaped head. Furthermore, simple hairs are formed on the underside, which stand clearly along the leaf veins.

The inflorescence consists of cymes with 1 to 3 individual flowers. The purple-pink to pink colored flowers are developed over the entire growing season. The flower tube is about 6 centimeters long.

The fruit is squeezed at the side and is egg-shaped when viewed from the side, with a broad, elongated beak and two broad lateral wings. The fruits are 6 centimeters long and 3.5 centimeters wide with the wings. Two different forms of spines are formed on the fruit. The hook spines, up to 25 millimeters long, are about five in a row, with the upper ones not extending beyond the beak. The base of the spines is broadened. The numerous simple spines are up to 4 millimeters long. Well visible, false partitions are formed that extend over 2/3 the length of the fruit compartment. The seeds are obovate and the wings indistinct.

Distribution and systematics

Uncarina abbreviata is endemic in the west and in central Madagascar , in the north of the province of Toliara and in the south of the province of Mahajanga .

The first description of the species as Harpagophytum abbreviatum was made in 1887 by Henri Ernest Baillon . Hans-Dieter Ihlenfeldt and Herbert Straka put the species in the genus Uncarina in 1962 .
