The Undine is a car transport ship under the Swedish flag . A fuel cell is being tested on board as a sustainable energy source for the auxiliary energy.

Car transporter Undine

The car transporter was delivered in 2003 by Daewoo Heavy Industry to Wallenius Wilhelmsen with the IMO number 9240160 and is sailing under the Swedish flag with home port Stockholm . The ship is measured with a length of 227.9 m, a width of 32.26 m and a draft of 9.5 m with 67,264 GT and has a load capacity of 28,388 dwt. 3,700 cars / 600 trucks can be transported in the hold. The slow-running two - stroke engine from MAN B&W with 14,700 kW enables the ship to reach a maximum speed of 20.5  kn .

Testing a fuel cell as a sustainable energy source

A 20 kW WFC20 fuel cell from Wärtsilä was installed on board the ship . The aim is to gain operational experience with the use of fuel cells on overseas ships. It is a solid oxide fuel cell called SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) that is operated with methanol . This was preceded by a Wärtsilä project that has been running since 2000 with solid oxide fuel cells for stationary, decentralized applications in the power range from 1 to 5 kW.

The background for this installation is the joint project of the METHAPU consortium to investigate sustainable shipping. In addition to the engine manufacturer Wärtsilä, the shipping group Wallenius Marine, the classification societies Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and Det Norske Veritas as well as the University of Genoa are involved.
