The unstriped pelamid ( Orcynopsis unicolor ) is a marine fish from the mackerel and tuna family (Scombridae). The fish live in the eastern Atlantic from Oslo (Norway) to Dakar (Senegal), and also in the Mediterranean . They are missing in Madeira, the Canary Islands and the Cape Verde Islands . As a summer guest you also come to the North Sea .

features

The unstriped pelamid reaches a maximum length of 1.30 meters and becomes sexually mature with a length of about 70 to 80 centimeters. The maximum published weight is 13.1 kilograms. It has the typical spindle-shaped shape of the tuna, a large mouth that reaches under the eyes, short pectoral fins and very small pelvic fins. The dorsal fin is divided into two parts, with a hard-rayed part supported by 12 to 14 spines and a shorter soft-rayed part supported by 12 to 15 fin rays. The first three quarters of the first dorsal fin are black. The short anal fin has 14 to 16 soft rays. Between the dorsal or anal fin and the crescent-shaped caudal fin, there are 6 to 9 small rafts above and below on the caudal fin stalk. The number of vertebrae is 37 to 39, 17 to 18 trunk vertebrae and 19 to 21 tail vertebrae. A swim bladder is missing. The region behind the head and around the pectoral fins is covered by a corset made of large, thick scales; the rest of the body is bare.

Way of life

The unstriped pelamid lives near the coast in small schools, especially in moderately tempered water. It stays very close to the surface of the water, so that the first dorsal fin protrudes out of the water like a shark. The fish is often seen together with hunting seabirds. As a predatory fish, it feeds on smaller fish, especially sardines , anchovies , small mackerel , jackfish and sea bream . The fish spawn in summer. Eggs and larvae are pelagic .

use

The unstriped pelamid is not a significant edible fish and is more of an accidental bycatch .
