The university library "Georgius Agricola" is a central facility of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg . It has been called Georgius Agricola since 1980.

Inventory and users (as of 2019)

The library has 711,682 books and 338 current subscriptions to print magazines. The digital holdings comprise 146,495 media units, including 58,827 electronic journals that are kept continuously.

The old scientific inventory has around 22,000 volumes, bequests, manuscripts, maps and mining cracks as well as an extensive collection of coins and medals.

In 2019, library statistics recorded 4,131 active users and 155,187 loans. 341 reading places, nine carrels and 37 computer workstations are available to users.

Special activities

From 1998 to 2014, the library supervised by the German Research Foundation funded special collections geology , mineralogy , petrology , soil science , mining , metallurgy and mine surveying .

Together with the Goettingen State and University Library , she has been developing and maintaining the virtual library for geosciences , mining , geography and thematic maps GEO-LEO since 2002 . On the document server GEO-LEOe-docs, scientists and students can publish and download geo- and mining science full texts free of charge.

From September 29th to October 2nd, 2009, the Freiberg University Library together with the Saxon State Archives / Mountain Archive Freiberg organized the 10th International Symposium “Cultural Heritage in Geoscientific Libraries - Archives - Museums - Collections”. The series of events was initiated u. a. by Peter Schmidt (1939–1999), who was custodian of the old scientific inventory from 1971 until his death.

Since 2009 the library has been participating in Qucosa , the document and publication server for academic libraries in Saxony.

The digital library of the Freiberg University Library has been online since November 2013. The university library thus opens the window to the beginnings of mining science research by making digitized documents - some from the 18th century - accessible to interested parties free of charge in a user-friendly portal.

For the 250th anniversary of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in 2015, the university library developed a mining portal together with the university administration.

Since 2016, Freiberg University Library has been responsible for the specialist information service for coal and steel, mining and metallurgy funded by the DFG .

The main library has been located on the TU Bergakademie Freiberg campus, Agricolastraße 10, since 1980. There are also two branch libraries and two special locations. Preparations for the construction of a new library building have been underway since 2008. Michael Fischer-Art redesigned the facade in August / September 2012.
