Unrein is the fifth official music album by the Braunschweig NDH band Oomph! and was released on March 2, 1998 by Virgin Records . On January 26th, 1998, the first release "Gekreuzigt" appeared in advance.

Label

Unrein is the first album to be released by the Virgin label. According to their own statements, the reason for the label change was as follows:

“Virgin was interested in us for the 'Defekt' tour back in 1995 and wanted to sign us back then, but unfortunately Modern Music did not release us from our contract, even though they wanted to buy us out of our deal [...] We knew, however, that it would many of these labels were in the Rammstein frenzy, and then they probably came across a band like Oomph! just right, which Rammstein said it had influenced. We finally decided on the company that wanted to sign us back in 1995 due to our independence and self-sufficient way of working. "

Background and subject

All the lyrics on the album were written by the singer Dero Goi. The thematic focus is on faith and the church . Guitarist Crap criticized in a later interview that "the entire album" Unrein "[is] only about the church theme".

The album was named after the ninth track of the same name. The meaning of the title is already evident from the intro "Mother's lap", which consists of just one sentence:

"We are born impure and from the first moment the guilt clings to us like the blood from mother's womb."

- Mother's lap

Songwriter Dero defines the title "Unrein" as follows:

“Of course, like most of my texts, the title 'Unrein' has different levels of interpretation. But it is undoubtedly always connected with the individual moral and ethical understanding of every human being and without this it is inconceivable. "

- Dero Goi

In terms of vocals, Dero always resorts to guttural singing . Most of the lyrics are in German , but the chorus of “Our Rescue” is in Latin and some of the songs are in English .

Crucified 2006

Due to the positive feedback of "Gekreuzigt" at concerts, the band decided to reissue the title and the whole thing, next to a cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "The Power of Love", as a "Gekreuzigt 2006 / The Power Of Love" single to publish. The text of the new version has been slightly changed, the instrumental has new effects and the vocal technique is less aggressive.

“It is YOU, the fans, who with your always euphoric reactions at the concerts“ crucified ”to one of OOMPH's greatest hits! made. Since the band has continuously developed this eight-year-old classic over time, they wanted to record it again [...] The gripping update impressively shows the development that Dero, Flux and Crap have made in recent years. The text, whose metaphorical language has an enormous charisma, has been expanded and restructured. A lot has also happened in terms of the instrumental implementation and the vocals. "

The Braunschweig-based company also came up with a number of ideas for the visual design of “Crucified 2006”: The video was shot in a brothel .
