Our Lady of Mount Carmel ( english Our Lady of Mount Carmel ) is a Catholic National Shrine and Parish Church in Quezon City in the capital region Metro Manila in the Philippines . The Church of the Diocese of Cubao is under the invocation Lady of Mount Carmel of Our the Virgin Mary consecrated and is of the Discalced Carmelites care. It bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The Irish Carmelites came to the Archdiocese of Manila in 1954 . The foundation stone for the church was laid on December 31 of that year and was blessed by the apostolic nuncio Egidio Vagnozzi . The church was consecrated on July 16, 1964 on the feast of Our Lady of the Mountains as the patron saint of the Carmelites by Cardinal Rufino Jiao Santos . On February 17, 1975 the church was given parish status. The Carmel Shrine was appointed by the Catholic Church through Bishop Honesto Ongtioco as a place of pilgrimage for the diocese of Cubao created in 2003. In 2018, Pope Francis announced the elevation of the church to a minor basilica .

Building

The single-nave church has a cruciform floor plan . A bell gable rises above the entrance facade with a statue of the Virgin Mary . The altar stands in a round apse . The church is a popular place for weddings with its colorful lead glazing . A columbarium is also attached to the church.
