Upata is a city in the north of the state of Bolívar in Venezuela . It is the capital and the most important city in the Piar district. Upata lies between the two rivers Orinoco and Cuyuní . The name Upatas is a native word that probably comes from the Kamaracoto group. It means "rose of the mountain" in German.

founding

The first attempts to build the city are said to have been made as early as 1739. However, it was officially founded on July 7, 1762 by Antonio de Cervera with the name Villa del Yocoima, de San Antonio de Padua . The name was chosen in honor of the Italian saint of Padua.
