The UralZIS-355M ( Russian УралЗИС-355М ) was a truck made by the Soviet vehicle manufacturer UralZIS . In the course of de-Stalinization, the plant was renamed Uralsky Avtomobilny Zavod in 1962 , and the truck had been given the name Ural-355M a year earlier .

Vehicle history

After the UralZIS plant started production in 1944 as a branch of ZIS in the Urals , it produced a copy of the ZIS-5 with the UralZIS-5 until 1955 . In the same year there were slight revisions to the vehicle and according to new regulations from 1945 it was renamed UralZIS-355. This model also differed only minimally from the ZIS-5. It was not until 1957 that more profound revisions to the 1933 design followed. The result was designated UralZIS-355M, with the M for modernized (Russian модернизированы).

The most striking change was that the cab was completely replaced by a new construction. At the same time, however, the engine output was also increased by increasing the compression. The maximum payload was increased from three to three and a half tons, and the curb weight increased by around half a ton.

Series production began in December 1957, according to other information only in 1958. There were hardly any technical changes during the construction period. Only the engine received a revision in 1961, but this did not change the performance data. The name was changed in the same year in the course of de-Stalinization . The ZIS was simply omitted from the vehicle name, and one year later the plant became the Uralsky Avtomobilny Zavod (UralAZ for short).

On October 16, 1965, production of the truck ceased. From this point on, the plant no longer built light two-axle vehicles, but instead specialized in the Ural-375, which had been in production since 1961 . This all-terrain military truck with three axles, gasoline engine and all-wheel drive remained in production until 1992. The variant with a diesel engine Ural-4320 , introduced a little later, is still being built today.

Although 192,580 units of the UralZIS-355M were built in the seven years of production (including at least 36,000 tank vehicles), the truck is extremely rare today. In the entire territory of the former USSR, twelve units were known as of 2005, ten of which were flatbed trucks and one type AZM-2,6 tanker. Newer sources speak of about twenty copies, including two tank trucks.

Model versions

In addition to the standard model with a flatbed and rear-axle drive, various other vehicles were built or tested. If there was no series production, this is noted.

  • UralZIS-382 - prototype of an all-wheel drive version (4 × 4) from 1957. Series production did not take place.
  • UralZIS-358 - prototype of a tipper from 1958, there was no series production of this model either.
  • AZM-2,6 - Tank vehicle manufactured on the basis of the UralZIS-355M for fuel with a capacity of 2600 liters.
  • AZPT-2,2 and AZM-23 - tank trucks for the transport of milk with a capacity of 2200 and 2300 l respectively.
  • ANM-355 - Tanker for the disposal of sewage, built in small numbers from 1963 to 1965.
  • Special vehicles for transporting wood as well as tractor units were manufactured. The latter, in particular, to achieve higher payloads.
  • In the 1960s, UralZIS-355M trucks were converted into buses at a repair shop in Kazakhstan . These had a seating capacity of 28 passengers, 12 people could also be transported in standing room.
