The Ural-4420 ( Russian Урал-4420 ) is a four-wheel drive truck from the production of the Russian Uralsky Avtomobilny Sawods . The tractor unit is based on the much better known Ural-4320 and has been in series production since 1980.

The previous generation around the Ural-375 and Ural-377 had models as tractor units. These are indicated by an S in the model designation. While the Ural-375S was off-road, the Ural-377S did not have all-wheel drive. The latter was also used to a small extent by the GDR's National People's Army .

The first prototypes of the Ural-4420, now with a diesel engine, appeared in 1973 in connection with the development of the Ural-4320. Since KamAZ had not yet started engine production at this point in time, the Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod supplied eight-cylinder diesel engines similar to the ones KamAZ later made. Series production of the Ural-4420 began in 1980, three years after that of the basic model, now with KamAZ engines.

After the Soviet Union collapsed, engines were increasingly sourced from the Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod. First eight-cylinder diesel engines of the JaMZ-238 type , later also six-cylinder engines of different designs from the same manufacturer. Today almost all trucks from the Uralsky Avtomobilny Zavod are equipped with engines from JaMZ, since both plants belong to the same parent company, the GAZ Group .

In addition to the version that has been outwardly almost unchanged for over 35 years, models in the forward control design are also sold today .

The NVA also imported the Ural-44202 from the USSR. From 1983 onwards, a few specimens came to the GDR for special military tasks, just as there had been a few imports with the predecessors.

Model variants

In the course of the long production history of the vehicle, three major model versions were produced. This does not include various prototypes that were not mass-produced.

  • Ural-4420 - In later versions also referred to as Ural-4420-01, Ural-4420-02 and Ural-4420-10, this is the basic version built since 1980. The vehicle can pull trailers weighing up to 15.2 tons. The overall gear ratio of the truck was partially changed in order to achieve higher top speeds.
  • Ural-44201 - prototype for operation with special semi-trailers . The axles of the trailer can also be driven via a power take-off shaft at the rear of the vehicle, creating a tractor-trailer with the drive formula 10 × 10. In Russian there is the term “active car train”.
  • Ural-44202 - Also Ural-44202-01, Ural-44202-02, Ural-44202-10, Ural-44202-30 and Ural-44202-40, designed for trailers up to initially 18, later 19 tons total weight.
  • Ural-44205 - Modernized version with loading crane and front handlebar design (the long hood is omitted).

In addition, the plant now also produces models with cabs from the former Iveco T series , which are visually very different from the original truck. The successor, the Ural-63704 , also uses this cab. There are also, at least as a prototype, examples with a new long-hooded cab, with the rear part being taken from the Iveco of the T-series and the front being a new design.
