Uromyces fabae-viciae is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the legume genera Vicia , Lathyrus and Pisum . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is spread all over the world. The infestation on broad beans is significant.
features
Macroscopic features
Uromyces viciae-fabae can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Uromyces fabae viciae- growing as with all Uromyces TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia usually grow on the underside in small groups on the host leaves. The Aecia of the species, also mostly growing on the underside of the leaves and on petioles, are whitish and cup-shaped. Their aeciospores are 18–26 × 15–21 µm in size, broadly ellipsoidal and warty. The uredia growing on both sides of the fungus are yellow-brown. The light golden uredospores are 24–29 × 19–22 µm in size, broadly ellipsoidal and spiky. The parts of the species growing on both sides and on stems are black-brown, compact and uncovered. The chestnut-brown teliospores are unicellular, usually ovoid to oval, smooth and mostly 27–35 × 19–23 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 60 µm long.
distribution
The known distribution area of Uromyces viciae-fabae includes the whole world.
ecology
The host plants of Uromyces viciae-fabae are various Vicia , Pisum and Lathyrus species. The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a macrocyclical development cycle with Spermogonia, Aecien, Telien and Uredien. As an auto-ecologic parasite, it does not change host .
meaning
Uromyces viciae-fabae is a major pest of the broad bean. Soil cultivation reduces the infestation, as the fungus overwinters in infected parts of the plant. Chemical control with Folicur and pyrethroid-containing insecticides is permitted .
