Tooth formula of the Sichuan shrew mole

The skull reaches a length of 21 to 22 millimeters. The animals have two incisors per half in the upper jaw , one canine , three premolars and three molars . The teeth in the lower jaw correspond to those in the upper jaw, but there they only have one incisor. Overall, the animals have a set of only 34 teeth while all other species of the genus have 38 teeth. The typical tooth formula is the main distinguishing feature from the other species of the genus.

distribution

Distribution area of the Sichuan shrew mole

The Sichuan shrew mole is endemic to the People's Republic of China . He can be found in the provinces of Gansu , Sichuan , Yunnan and Shaanxi .

Way of life

As with all species of the genus, there is hardly any information about the way of life of the Sichuan shrew mole. Like the other species of the genus, it lives on the ground and looks for small invertebrates there for food. In Wenchuan , the species occurs sympatric with the Chinese shrew mole ( Uropsilus gracilis ), there it lives below 2200 meters altitude, while the Chinese shrew mole occurs above 3000 meters.

Systematics

The Sichuan shrew mole is classified as an independent species within the shrew mole (genus Uropsilus ), which consists of four species and is assigned to the moles . The first scientific description was made by Alphonse Milne-Edwards in 1872, who described the species and the genus using individuals from Sichuan. In some cases, all other species of the genus were assigned to this species, but today they are considered independent.

No subspecies are distinguished within the species.

Hazard and protection

The species is listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This is justified by the comparatively wide distribution and the assumed high populations, the occurrence in several protected areas and the only slight decline in populations . There are no known risks to the company's existence.
