Ursula Brunner (activist)
Ursula Brunner-Storz (born January 7, 1925 in Frauenfeld ; † March 23, 2017 there ) was a Swiss activist for fair trade . She was the founder of the “ banana women ” movement, pastor's wife and Thurgau's Grand Councilor ( FDP ).
Life
Ursula Brunner was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Thurgau in 1972 as the first woman for the FDP . Twelve years later she was expelled from the party because she had organized a peace camp in protest against the army show in Frauenfeld and had founded a group of " Women for Peace ".
Shaken up by the film Bananera Libertad by Peter von Gunten , in which the social and ecological grievances in banana cultivation in Central America were discussed, Brunner began campaigning for a “fair trade” in bananas and other products from developing countries from 1973 onwards . She and her fellow campaigners organized themselves as "Banana women from Frauenfeld" and sensitized the public to the problems of world trade and banana cultivation.
Brunner and the “Banana Women” are considered to be the pioneers of fair trade in Switzerland. She was awarded the Zug Culture Prize in 2003 and the Women's Business Award of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences in 2014. She died in Frauenfeld in March 2017 at the age of 92.
