Urtica rupestris is a species from the genus of nettles ( Urtica ). In Italian it bearsthe common name “Ortica rupestre”, whichcan be translated as “rock nettle”in German . It only occurs in Sicily .

description

Urtica rupestris grows as a perennial plant and reaches heights of 30 to 100 cm. The branched, partly twisted stem is woody at the base, cylindrical whitish and, like the leaf stalks, hairless and covered with a few stinging hairs . The opposite constantly disposed on the stem leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The thin petiole is 1.5 to 4.5 cm long. The simple, bald or sparsely hairy, glossy leaf blade dark green on top is ovate with a length of 1.5 to 10 cm and a width of 1 to 6 cm. The base of the spade is truncated to wedge-shaped, the tip of the spade is pointed. The leaf margin has broad, blunt teeth. The elongated cystolites are mainly located on the underside of the strut. The four free, deciduous stipules are lanceolate and shorter than the petiole.

Urtica rupestris is mostly dioecious, separate sexes ( diocesan ). The axillary, very rarely short-branched, upright-protruding racemose male inflorescences are arranged in pairs per node and reach a length of 2 to 8 cm. The inflorescence axis is surrounded all around by greenish flowers and not occupied by stinging hairs. The female inflorescences, which protrude to pendulous, also racemose, are only up to 2 cm long and thus shorter than the male ones. The egg-shaped achenes are 1 to 1.25 mm long.

The flowering period extends from April to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = about 26.

Occurrence

Urtica rupestris is endemic to south-eastern Sicily and occurs as a tertiary relic mainly in the Hyblean Mountains . It settles in crevices of shaded rocks on limestone and volcanic rock at altitudes between 0 and 600 meters.

Taxonomy

The first description of Urtica rupestris was made in 1821 by Giovanni Gussone . It belongs to the subgenus Dendrourtica Chrtek .
