The Mittelsteighütte primeval forest is a primeval forest and former nature reserve in the Bavarian Forest National Park .

Lying dead wood

location

The jungle is inclined to the southwest at an altitude of 700 to 800 meters immediately northeast of the town of Zwieslerwaldhaus and is bounded in the south and southeast by the Großer Steinbach. The hiking trail leads through the middle of the area from Zwieslerwaldhaus to the Kleiner and Großer Falkenstein , while another hiking trail to the Ruckowitzschachten branches off here. The Mittelsteigbach flows through the jungle. On the northeastern edge is a now largely overgrown former goat pasture.

history

The stock was hardly used since 1761 and in 1914 it became a sanctuary. By decree of the government of Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate of March 28, 1939, the 37.8 ha nature reserve "Mittelsteighütte am Zwieseler Waldhaus", which was later expanded to 45.75 ha, was established. In 1997 the area became part of the extended Bavarian Forest National Park.

description

The tree population consists mainly of red beech , silver fir and common spruce . The stand build-up is two-tiered and consists of very old trees on the one hand and dense beech regeneration on the other. The primeval forest area is characterized by the presence of an unusually large amount of dead wood . The former giants of the jungle have largely collapsed since around 1980 and are in a state of advanced decay, for which acid rain was initially considered to be the cause, but later the assumption arose that according to the mosaic cycle concept, a decay phase is currently going through in a recurring cycle becomes.

Flora and fauna

The peculiarity of the Mittelsteighütte primeval forest area as a place of occurrence of rare animal and plant species has been known for a long time. For example, Richard Schlegel reported observations of two blue-nosed owls from here in 1912 for 1890 , and Josef Gengler in 1914 for an owl in 1870 . In 1985, Wolfgang Scherzinger identified fifty species of birds for 1979/80, including the miniature flycatcher , the white-backed woodpecker and the three-toed woodpecker as the greatest particularities . The current renewal phase with dominant young beech growth reduces the quality of the biotope, especially for cave breeders and large birds.

Rare dead wood dwellers were found among the beetles, including bark shredders , head horn shredders and the weevil Hexarthrum duplicatum . The mushroom and moss flora is also unusual. In 2010 the Wollige Scheidling was found here.
