Usher Abell

Usher Abell (born May 6, 1915 in Barlow, Kentucky , United States, † February 6, 2003 in Sioux Valley Township, South Dakota , United States ) was an American violinist , violist , music teacher and university teacher .

Life

Usher Abell's parents were Lyman Abell and his wife Gladys Wilson Abell. He grew up in Paducah and attended Paducah Tilghman High School there. He then studied violin at Murray State University and at the University of Colorado Boulder . On August 27, 1939, he married the musician Edith Parish Abell (1916-2006) in Martin , Tennessee . After graduating, he taught violin at Quachita College in Arkadelphia , Arkansas . From 1939 to 1942 he was concertmaster of the Arkansas Symphony in Little Rock . During World War II he joined the US Navy . Here he served as a musician from 1942 to 1945. From 1946 to 1971 he taught at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion as a violin teacher and from 1952 to 1969 was chairman of the Department of Music there. In 1988 he and his wife with the Gouvernor's Award for exceptional support of the arts in South Dakata by Governor George S. Mickelsen awarded . He was the founder and first president of the South Dakota Music Teachers Association , first president of the South Dakota String Teacher Association and played violin and viola in the Sioux City Symphony for over 30 years . The violist Jack Abell was his son.

As part of his work as a violin teacher, he published various violin works.

He also published arrangements for band.

He continued to write articles and essays for the American Music Teacher magazine, among others .
