The Uthlande is a combined car and passenger ferry of the Sietas - type 182 of the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei Föhr-Amrum GmbH (WDR). It is the shipping company's first double-ended ferry .

history

The Uthlande was built in 2009/2010 at the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde. It is the first ferry to be built for WDR since 1995. On June 15, 2010 the Uthlande in Wyk auf Föhr was put into service. Since then it has been operating between Dagebüll , Wyk on Föhr and Wittdün on Amrum .

particularities

As a double-end ferry with Voith-Schneider drive , the Uthlande differs significantly from the previous WDR ferries. Passengers are no longer embarked and disembarked via the vehicle deck, but via barrier-free pedestrian ramps that are fed from the jetties. This required appropriate structural measures at the port facilities in Dagebüll, Wyk and Wittdün. The previous time-consuming turning in the harbor basin should be omitted in the future, but this cannot be achieved at least when driving across all three ports and back. The capacity of the Uthlande has increased compared to previous WDR ferries. The ferry has five instead of four lanes for transporting motor vehicles, so that 75 cars can be transported at a time. In addition, it has a larger sundeck, which has its disadvantages due to the centrally built wheelhouse. One side is always partially in the shadow.

With the commissioning of the new Uthlande , the Uthlande (built in 1980) was initially shut down. It remained in Wyker Hafen in summer 2010 and was even used for a short time. At the end of October the ship was transferred to the shipyard in Husum, where it was still waiting to be sold. Due to the sale of Schleswig-Holstein , the Uthlande was used again until the second double-ended ferry was put into service.

In December 2011, the new, largely identical sister ship Schleswig-Holstein was put into service.

In April 2011, Uthlande received the Ship Pax Award for its innovative concept.
