description

Zygomorphic flower with spur

Appearance

Utricularia blanchetii is an herbaceous plant , whether it is annual or perennial is not yet certain. Without an inflorescence a population of Utricularia blanchetii is strongly reminiscent of a kind of moss or grass in its ground-covering growth . It forms a few rhizoids at the base of the inflorescence shafts .

Stolons and traps

The numerous, up to 10 millimeters long and 0.1 to 0.15 millimeters thick, branched stolons are provided with numerous egg-shaped, approximately 0.25 mm long, stalked traps that carry a single, bent back, awl-shaped appendage at their opening another, split, curved forward at its tip.

leaf

Stalked leaves grow from the stolons and also carry traps. The dark green leaf blade is very narrowly linear with a length of up to 8 millimeters and a width of 0.1 to 0.25 millimeters. The stipules are egg to delta-shaped with a length of up to 1.5 millimeters, taper to a point and are strongly toothed.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period extends from February to August. Of 6 to 15 centimeters long, upright inflorescence stem is cylindrical narrow, thin, bare and at the base papillate . Several tiny scale leaves that are egg to delta-shaped can be found near the ground. One to six flowers stand loosely in a racemose inflorescence .

The hermaphroditic flowers are 10 to 15 millimeters long and up to 9 millimeters wide, zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The corolla is pale blue to purple with a white-yellow sap mark .

Fruit and seeds

The capsule fruit , which is around 2 millimeters in diameter, opens along a single, vertical predetermined breaking point during drying and releases many seeds. The seeds are egg-shaped with a length of about 0.2 millimeters.

Occurrence

Utricularia blanchetii is endemic to the center of the Brazilian state of Bahia . It thrives at altitudes of 850 to 1750 meters in damp sand, between rocks and by streams.

Systematics

The first description of utricularia blanchetii was made in 1844 by de Alphonse Pyrame Candolle in Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis , 8, page 13. The specific epithet blanchetii honors the Swiss plant collector Jacques Samuel Blanchet .

The species Utricularia blanchetii belongs to the Oligocista section from the subgenus Aranella in the genus Utricularia .
