Uttara (also The Beautiful Uttara ; Original: উত্তরা , uttarā ) is an Indian drama directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta from 2000.

action

The film takes place in a remote village in the Purulia district of Bengal . Railroad guards Balaram and Nemai have little to do at their posts and spend their time wrestling on a hill next to the railway line. Sport is her favorite hobby.

One of the villagers is a Christian pastor with his nephew Matthew. He cares for the poor, oppressed and lepers in the area. A group of old men dreams of traveling to the United States via Kolkata , but they have a complete lack of geographical knowledge.

A group of masked dancers, musicians and dwarfs appear regularly in the village. They come from a neighboring village, where they have created their own world.

Balaram returns from visiting his aunt. She had chosen a bride for him. With his young wife Uttara, Balaram has a property that his friend Nemai envies him for a short time. Uttara gets to know village life, which has slowly changed since her arrival. The previously friendly and playful daily wrestling matches between the two of them are becoming more and more serious and dogged.

A couple of young Hindu men from the city drive through the village in their jeep and keep their boredom away by harassing the locals. Uttara and above all the Christian pastor and his small parish hall are exposed to their attacks. They finally set fire to it along with the pastor tied to it. In a panic, Uttara tries to call Balaram and Nemai to help, but the two are so fixated on their fight that they hardly notice their surroundings anymore. One of the dwarfs offers Uttara to seek refuge in their village, but he is immediately shot by the young Hindu. They hunt Uttara, rape and kill her.

Against an evening sky, the silhouettes of Balaram and Nemai are still fighting.

Reviews

Meditative-poetic drama that alternates between metaphor and parable and uses simple stylistic means to create an ambiguous atmosphere that transcends concrete events without diminishing the committed plea for more tolerance.
