Athletic career

Uwe Becker played in the youth department of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt from 1971. Between 1976 and 1978 he completed 21 international matches with the GDR junior national team. Already in the 1977/78 season he was used in the league team of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt. In the second half of the season he played for the injured regular right-back Wolfgang Birke in eight point games, in which he was six times in the starting line-up. After Becker had only been used once in the league in the 1978/79 season, coach Manfred Pfeifer put him in the 1979/80 season, in which Birke was long-term injured, in 23 games mainly as a right-back. In this way, he also came into play in the final of the GDR soccer cup on May 17, 1980 in his regular position. FC Rot-Weiß lost the final 3-1 after extra time against FC Carl Zeiss Jena .

After Birke was restored, Becker lost his place in the regular eleven and was only used four times in the league in the 1980/81 and 1981/82 seasons. In the first half of the 1982/83 season he was used under the new coach Siegmar Menz in seven league games until he began a three-year military service in November 1982. During this time he played for the army sports community forward Neubrandenburg in the second-rate GDR league and completed ten point games. The ASG Neubrandenburg was founded at the end of April 1984, and Becker had to move to the ASG Vorwärts Dessau . There he played a further 35 GDR league games until May 1985.

For the 1985/86 season, Becker appeared again in the upper division squad of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt. However, he was first used in the GDR league team FC Rot-Weiß II and was only used in the second half of the season with eleven games in the major league, of which he only managed three over the full playing time. 1986/87 he was used by coach Hans Meyer from the beginning of the season. In the first half of the season he was mainly used in midfield, when Manfred Pfeifer took over training again on matchday 22, he put Becker in the defense as before. Of the 26 point games, Becker played 21 games, but was replaced seven times. Becker played his last league season in 1987/88. He was called up again from the first day of play, but on the third day of play he was sent off and received a suspension. After he could be used again from the 10th game day and scored his only league on that day, he got his third warning after four games and was suspended again. After that, coach Pfeifer only used him on matchday 16 for 70 minutes. On the last day of the season he was substituted on again for 18 minutes as a farewell.

Together with his teammates Martin Busse and Josef Vlay , Becker moved to the GDR league club Robotron Sömmerda for the 1988/89 season , where he played 66 second division games and scored two goals until 1991.
