Uz (Bible)

Uz ( Hebrew ע֥וּץ, ancient Greek Ως Ōs ) is the name of the country in the Old Testament in which the biblical figure Job lived. In addition, four people with the same name are mentioned.

Country Uz

Uz is the country in which the biblical figure Job lives ( Job 1,1  EU ). In addition to the Book of Job, the country Uz is also mentioned in Jer 25.20  EU and in Klgl 4.21  EU .

It is not known exactly where Uz was. Two localizations are mainly discussed in research: Edom , the area east of the southern part of the Jordan Depression and Aram near the Mesopotamia . Regardless of this, it must have been available to Job's enemies (e.g. Chaldeans ).

The location of Uz is not of central importance for the statement in the Book of Job .

Uz as a personal name

Uz, son of Aram

According to ( Gen 10.23  EU ) , Uz designates the firstborn son Arams and grandson Sems as a person and tribal name . His brothers are called Hul , Geter and Masch . Uz is considered to be the namesake of an Aramaic tribe. The section of the Table of Nations Gen 10: 22-23  EU , in which Uz and his brothers are mentioned, belongs to the priestly scriptures.

The Muslim scholar Ibn Kathīr identifies with Uz the father of ʿAd. This is the progenitor of the people mentioned in the Koran ʿĀd .

Uz, son of Nahor

Uz is also the name of the firstborn son of Abraham's brother Nahor ( Gen 22.21  EU ). His mother's name was Milka and his brothers were called Bus, Kemuël, Kesed, Haso, Pildasch, Jidlaf and Betuël. His half-brothers, born by Rëuma, are Tebach, Gaham, Tahasch and Maacha .

Uz, son of Dishan

Uz is also the first-born son of the chief of the Horites Dischan ( Gen 36.28  EU ) or Dischon ( 1 Chr 1.42  EU ) and the grandson of Esau . His brother is called Aran.

Uz, Merari's father

After all, Uz is Merari's father in the book Judit and the grandfather of the main character of this book ( Jdt 8,1  EU ).
