Václav Dobiáš (composer)

Václav Dobiáš (born September 22, 1909 in Radčice , † May 22, 1978 in Prague ) was a Czech composer.

Dobiáš wrote his first compositions at the age of ten. He studied in Prague, first privately with Josef Bohuslav Foerster , and later with Vítězslav Novák at the Prague Conservatory . There he learned of Alois Haba the microtonal music know.

After the February revolution in 1948, the communist Dobiáš was hailed as an official artist loyal to the line and as a model of socialist realism . In 1958 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and in 1960 a member of the National Assembly.

From 1950 until his death he taught as a professor of composition at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts . His students included Ivan Řezáč , Miroslav Raichl , Ivan Kurz , Václav Riedlbauch and Jiří Stivín .

He composed two symphonies , an overture , a sinfonietta , chamber music works, cantatas , song cycles and songs . Czech national traditions played a major role in his work. Dobiáš was friends with Dmitri Schostakowitsch and Arthur Honegger .
