Castle Garden Bazaar (Budapest)
Burggarten Bazaar

The Burggarten Bazaar (Hungarian: Várkert Bazár ) is a market in Budapest 's first district on Miklós Ybl Square. The listed complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site along the banks of the Danube , Andrássy Street and the Castle Palace . The complex forms one of the entrances to the castle hill.

history

The castle palace and the market in front of it at the end of the 19th century

In the 19th century, the Pest district on the opposite side of the Danube developed rapidly, with representative buildings and pedestrian zones being built near the bank. Buda, on the other hand, was still characterized by single-storey buildings from the 18th century. At the beginning of the 1870s the idea was born to build a representative building with gardens at the foot of the Várhegy (German: Burgberg). The complex was built between 1875 and 1883 according to plans by Miklós Ybl in the neo-renaissance style and forms the end of the city garden facing the Danube. Originally shops were housed in the arcades, later studios were set up there. Alajos Stróbl , a Hungarian sculptor and creator of the Matthias Fountain , worked here from 1884 .

The building was badly damaged in World War II . The tower on the edge of the market was destroyed as well as other parts of the complex.

The building functioned as the Buda Youth Park between 1961 and 1984, where many music events and concerts for young people were held. In 1980, several people were injured when a stone railing on a staircase collapsed during a concert by the band EDDA . The condition of the facility has deteriorated continuously since the 1980s, which eventually led to a complete closure in 1984.

renovation

Renovated Burggarten bazaar

The renovation was decided in 2011. Construction work began in summer 2013. On April 4, 2014, the completed section of the monument was handed over and viewed by more than 50,000 people within three days. On April 7th, the day after the parliamentary elections, the Várkért Bazar closed again and the second construction phase began. The completed facility was opened on August 29, 2014. This includes exhibition space, an event center, an underground car park with 300 parking spaces and a newly created Renaissance garden . However, the tower has not yet been rebuilt, as has other parts of the original facility.

During the renovation work in 2012 and 2013, archaeologists from the Budapest History Museum found objects from the past 750 years, including jewelry, silver coins, pots, tools and weapons from the Middle Ages and the time of the Turkish occupation . An exhibition of these finds is located in the south wing of the Várkert Bazár.

From the banks of the Danube to the castle

Numerous alternative routes lead from Várkert Bazár to the castle palace , one starting point is the staircase pavilion accessible from Lanchíd utca. The main lift to the gardens is also located in the pavilion. From there an escalator and a staircase on the fortress wall lead to the upper promenade. From there the castle palace can be reached via further stairs or with the elevator. This creates another barrier-free access to the castle palace.
