history

Although Anhalt did not take part in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig with any unit of its own, numerous memorials for the major event were created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary. The background is the relief that was felt after the constantly changing troops of the great powers France , Russia and Prussia involved in the battle had demanded a lot from the small country in the course of 1813. The monument was erected at the suggestion of the local military association.

shape

Like most monuments of this type, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal consists of larger stones that have been piled up. They are boulders , some of which come from the Kaiserteich. A large stone, probably also a boulder, stands perpendicular to it and serves as an inscription stone. Its writing field is designed slightly differently in that the iron cross was inserted in a recess on the right side, while the left half bears the inscription 1813/18 October / 1913 . Typically, the Iron Cross is otherwise on top and the inscription below.

In addition, in contrast to the other memorial stones in the Köthener Land , it is crowned with a ball. The material of the surrounding fence also differs from other octagonal-framed monuments to the Battle of the Nations. While metal fences were created in the neighboring towns of Micheln and Wulfen , the decision was made here to use metal pillars with a wooden fence between them.
