course

Boat trip on the underground section of the Punkva

The Punkva is formed in the underground of the Moravian Karst by the confluence of the Sloupský potok and Bílá voda rivers . Both tributaries initially run above ground. Sloupský potok arises from the union of the Luha and Suchý potok brooks above the village of Sloup . Below Sloup, the brook seeps away and flows through the lower elevations of the Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně and Amatérská jeskyně (amateur caves ). The second tributary, Bílá voda, has its source near Protivanov , falls into the Nová Rasovna abyss near Holštejn and its course continues underground to the amateur cave. There both streams connect and the watercourse, which is henceforth called Punkva, enters the Macocha Abyss .

From Macocha, the Punkva flows through the water domes of the Punkva caves , where it can be navigated on boats. Shortly before it emerges from the karst bedrock, the river takes in the water from the Lopače and Krasovský creeks . The Punkva appears again in the area around Vavřinec na Moravě .

On the surface, the river crosses the deep, wooded Punkva valley with a few small ponds and then flows through the Arnoštovo údolí valley along the industrial development there. On the edge of Blansko the Punkva flows into the Svitava .

natural reserve

The Punkva Valley with its numerous caves and karst features was declared the National Nature Reserve Vývěry Punkvy ( Punkwa Springs ) in 1997 on an area of 556.5 hectares . Together with the underground river, it has been one of the eleven wetlands in the Czech Republic that have been protected under the Ramsar Convention since 2004 .
