Věra Nosková (born April 9, 1947 in Hroznětín ) is a Czech writer , journalist and promoter of critical thinking .

Life

Věra Nosková spent her childhood in Strakonice in southern Bohemia . Later she graduated from a pedagogical school in Prague . Before the political upheaval in 1989, she worked in a wide variety of professions - from decorator and pastry chef to archivist and draftsman in the Association of Architects. For the longest time she worked as a kindergarten teacher and a post-school teacher in a youth home in Prague.

Immediately after the fall of the Wall in 1989, she started her career as a journalist and worked for newspapers, magazines and radio. She has been writing fiction since 2003. She publishes popular science and literary works in her own publishing house.

Together with the astrophysicist Jiří Grygar, Věra Nosková set up a Czech skeptics club , the Český klub skeptiků Sisyfos, whose task is to promote critical thinking. She is a member of the PEN Club . Věra Nosková lives in Prague, is married and has two grown sons.

Poetry

In the 1960s and 1970s, poems by Nosková appeared in literary magazines. Some of her lyric texts were recited in the Rubín Theater in Prague. Her poetry collection Inkoustové pádlo (Ink Paddles) was published in 1988. In 2013 Věra Nosková published the poetry collection Být básnířkou (To be a poet).

After 1989, Nosková worked as an editor at Český deník (Czech daily newspaper), at the major publisher EuroPress of the Bauer Media company , at the agricultural magazine Týden (Woche), at the supplement of the business newspaper Hospodářské noviny Věda a lidé (Science and People). She was a reporter for the newspaper Blesk (Blitz) and a freelance worker for other daily newspapers and magazines.

In the 1990s Nosková acted as a presenter for the Czech radio station Vltava and was the author of drafts for television programs . She currently writes regular feature articles for the weekly Rozhlas (broadcast), blogs writes for the website of Czech Television ČT24 and comments for the daily Mlada fronta Dnes .

Fiction

Since 1996 Věra Nosková has written 14 books. Her fourth novel, Bereme co je (We take what is coming), was described by literary critics as a generational novel and was proposed for the Magnesia Litera Prize. The autobiographical work about growing up in a small town is at the same time a historical document about the communist dictatorship of the 1960s. It's the first part of a trilogy. The second part Obsazeno (Occupied), proposed for the Josef Škvorecký Prize , tells about the time after the Soviet occupation in 1968 . Český rozhlas (Czech Radio) broadcast both volumes as serial novels. The third volume Víme svý (We know ours ) closes the trilogy with a description of the time of normalization in the 1970s in a small Czech border town.

Věra Nosková's collection of short stories Ať si holky popláčou ( Let the girls cry) was nominated for the Božena Němcová Prize. The novel Proměny (Metamorphoses), published by Nosková in 2013, was awarded the Readers' Prize of the Czech Book (Cena čtenářů České knihy) in 2014. The book will be broadcast as a serial from the Český rozhlas. In 2014 Nosková published her first children's book Kamarád Jak (Freund Wie).
