The VR series K5 was a hot steam - steam locomotive - series of the Finnish State Railways Valtionrautatiet (VR) with the wheel arrangement 1'D h2. The light locomotives could be used universally on all routes for passenger and freight trains .

The locomotives were built between 1927 and 1953. The VR used them until 1975.

history

At the end of the 1920s, due to the increase in transport volume, the existing locomotives of the 1'D-coupled series K1 and K2 as well as the 1'C-coupled series G1 to G12, some of which only existed in a few copies, were no longer sufficient in terms of performance or quantity. in addition, their top speed was too low.

In order to remedy the deficiency, the K5 series was built for the K and S series from 1927 with significantly greater power and top speed. 100 copies were made by Lokomo and Tampella with road numbers 800–899 between 1927 and 1930. The locomotives were known colloquially as the Pikku-Jumbo .

After the winter war of 1939/1940, 24 K5 series locomotives had to be handed over to the Soviet Union .

When the Finnish series scheme was changed in 1942, the previous series K5 was given the new series designation Tk3 .

The Lokomo and Tampella locomotive works were able to complete the locomotives 1100–1116 and 1129–1146 during the Second World War and then between 1943 and 1948 with great difficulty .

The 20 locomotives 1147–1166 were manufactured by Frichs in Denmark in 1949 . The final assembly took place in the main VR workshop in Hyvinkää .

The last four locomotives were supplied by Lokomo. They were given the numbers 1167 to 1170.

Raumabahn locomotives

The private Rauma Railway between Kokemäki and Rauma was taken over by the State Railway on July 1, 1950. Among other things, VR received two identical locomotives that Tampella had built in 1927 as No. 8 (later No. 10) and 1935 (No. 8). They were given numbers 1118 and 1117.

Technical characteristics

The locomotives designed for wood and coal firing formed the largest steam locomotive series in Finland with a total of 161 units. With the relatively low axle load of around 10.7 tonnes, they could be used on routes with a light superstructure . The locomotives had two cylinders with single steam expansion.

The paintwork of the locomotives was similar to that of other VR steam locomotives, essentially dark green with a black smoke chamber and chimney. Some locomotives had thin gold stripes on delivery. These were not carried out again when repainted, so they immediately disappeared.

End of use

The retirement at VR began in the 1960s.
