The Valmalenco ( Lombard val Malénch ), German also Malencotal , is a side valley of the Valtellina in the western Rhaetian Alps in the Italian province of Sondrio ( Lombardy ). The valley begins in Sondrio and stretches about 15 kilometers north to Piz Bernina . Its main town is Chiesa in Valmalenco .

Two mineral types and a monoclinic polytype of the mineral mckelveyite- (Y) were first discovered and described in Valmalenco . For the Artinite the “Miniera di Franscia” near Franscia near the municipality of Lanzada and for the Brugnatellite the “Ciappanico Asbestos Mine” near Ciappanico near the municipality of Torre di Santa Maria is the exact type locality (first place of discovery).
