The Val Morteratsch is a valley in the municipality of Pontresina in the canton of Graubünden that was created by glacier retreat . It begins on the northern flank of Piz Bernina , runs in a straight line from south to north and flows into Val Bernina after about 8 kilometers near Morteratsch .

geography

In the west of the valley lies Piz Boval , in the east the Munt Pers . The Morteratsch Glacier is located in the upper part of the valley . The name Val Morteratsch is more recent and based on the name of the Val Roseg (Eng. Roseg Valley), which was created by the Roseg glacier. That is why the name Val Morteratsch is not yet on the Swiss national map. It is traversed by the glacier- speared Ova da Morteratsch .

In the lower Val Morteratsch, trees also grow on the valley floor. The glacier withdrew there over 100 years ago. Near the glacier tongue, the glacier retreat was not that long ago. Bushes are already growing on the valley floor, but there are only trees above the moraine sides .

Tourism and transport

The Val Morteratsch can be reached through the Bernina Railway station of the same name . A hiking trail leads to the glacier in around 50 minutes. Also a hiking trail that is Boval hut of the SAC's reach. Because of its easy accessibility and the nearby Bovalhütte, the Morteratsch glacier is used for alpine ice training. At the entrance to the Morteratschtal there is a climbing garden suitable for children with routes of all difficulty levels up to VII. A climbing garden has also been set up at the Bovalhütte.
