Valaichchenai (also Valaichenai , Tamil வாழைச்சேனை) is a city not far from the east coast of Sri Lanka . Politically it lies in the Batticaloa district , which is part of the Eastern Province .

geography

The city is located on the south side of the Valaichchenai lagoon on the Bay of Bengal . The ocean is a few kilometers away. The touristic place Kalkudah , to which Pasikudah belongs, is three kilometers east of the city . It has been the most important tourist center on the east coast of Sri Lanka since the end of the civil war in 2009. The second city of the settlement area, Oddamavadi , joins in the south . The city is bounded to the north and west by the Valaichchenai lagoon.

The terrain is level and is only a few meters above sea level . The climate is drier than in other parts of Sri Lanka, rain falls mainly in the monsoon season .

administration

The districts of Sri Lanka are divided into several divisions (officially Divisional secretary's divisions ). The city of Valaichchenai is, however, in two different divisions, because the divisions were divided based on the settlement areas of the ethnic groups. For example, the eastern part of Valaichchenai, which is inhabited by Sri Lankan Tamils , is in the Koralai Pattu division because the majority of the population there is of the same ethnic group. The western part of the city is in the Koralai Pattu Central division . Valaichchenai forms a large part of this. There is no clear delimitation of the city. However, the Grama Niladharis, i.e. the subdivisions of the divisions, which have Valaichchenai in their name, can be seen as the official urban area. Each Grama Niladhari has its own administrator (officially an officer) and no mayor for the entire city.

Metropolitan area

The area around the cities of Valaichchenai and Oddamavadi forms a metropolitan area in which almost the entire area is built-up and the boundaries of the places are not clearly recognizable. In addition to Valaichchenai and Oddamavadi, the other Grama Niladharis of the Koralai Pattu Central division (except Punanai East and Thiyawatthuwan ) and the Grama Niladharis Meeravodai , Kinnaiady , Sunkankerny , Karuwakkerny , Kannakipuram , Puthukudyiruppu , the division of Koralai Pattu , Pethalai and Kalmai belong to the division . In addition, all Grama Niladharis of the Koralai Pattu West division (except Paper Town ) can be included.

population

Making statements about the number of inhabitants is difficult and does not produce clear results. There is no survey of the number of inhabitants for the city, only for the divisions and the Grama Niladharis lying in them. Valaichchenai is divided into two divisions, so you have to add the population of all Grama Niladharis to get the population. As of 2007, all Grama Niladharis called Valaichchenai have a population of 8,172 people. Another problem is that the settlement area is much larger than the city itself. For example, the neighboring town of Oddamavadi is directly connected to Valaichchenai and other places border the city directly. Therefore one can also consider the neighboring places as districts of Valaichchenai and the population would be considerably higher.

The city is divided into two urban areas. The part to the east of the main street is predominantly inhabited by Sri Lankan Tamils and is therefore predominantly Hindu . The larger western part, on the other hand, is almost exclusively inhabited by Moors who are Muslim . This separation can also be seen in the distribution of the places of worship. There are several Hindu temples on the eastern side , while there are many mosques on the western side . There are also several church buildings in the city. The proportion of Muslims in the Muslim Grama Niladharis is over 99 percent. Only Muslims live in a Grama Niladhari.

economy

The economy is based on agriculture and fishing . Agriculture is mainly made up of banana , rice and coconut plantations . Big changes in the economic structure came with the establishment of paper mills . The new bridge of the A15 for the A11 to Colombo makes Valaichchenai easier to reach for future economic development.

traffic

The A15 leads to the two most important cities on Sri Lanka's east coast, Trincomalee and Batticaloa . The A11, which begins not far from the city in Thirukkondaiadimadu , creates the connection to the Colombo-Trincomalee Highway, the A6. In addition Valaichchenai has a station of Sri Lanka Railways on the Batticaloa Line. Trains run directly to Batticaloa and Colombo from there.
