Valve Pormeister (born April 13, 1922 in Tallinn ; † October 27, 2002 there ) was an Estonian architect .

Life

Valve Pormeister was born under the maiden name Valve Ulm. She graduated from the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR in 1952 in the field of garden and park design. She then worked for the state company Eesti Põllumajandusprojekt ("Estonian agricultural project") until 1964 and at Eesti Maaehitusprojekt ("Estonian agricultural project") until 1992 , since 1979 as the project chief architect.

She achieved her breakthrough with the construction of the "flower pavilion" ( Estonian Lillepaviljon ) and the associated café in Tallinn, which was completed a little later, with a direct connection to the surrounding landscape, "a prime example of organic architecture" with models of architecture in Finland and Denmark from the 1950s .

Valve Pormeister quickly became one of the leading architects during the Soviet occupation of Estonia . Her credo was the use of natural materials and a stronger architectural focus on nature. She planned numerous gardens and rural settlements. Her designs for the design of the communities Saku , Kurtna , Vinni and Viiratsi as well as the associated farm buildings are particularly well known . She was also entrusted with greening projects for numerous buildings. Since 1955 she has also organized popular flower exhibitions in Tallinn and Moscow .

Pormeister received important Estonian awards for her work, including the State Prize of the Estonian SSR in 1965 and 1967 and the Culture Prize of the Republic of Estonia in 2000. In 1967 she was awarded the title of "Honored Architect of the Estonian SSR".
