Vanilla columbiana is a species of vanilla ( Vanilla ) in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). The climbing plant is found in Colombia .

description

Vanilla columbiana is an evergreen climber. The fleshy shoot axis reaches up to 1 centimeter in diameter, the length of the internodes is about 15 centimeters. The sessile leaves are elongated to lanceolate, with blunt ends at the front. The leaf length is about 11 centimeters, the width 3.7 centimeters.

The inflorescence axis is 3.5 to 4 inches long. The bracts are 0.4 to 0.7 inches long, oblong to oval shaped, they end blunt. The ovary is 2.5 inches long. The sepals and lateral petals are lanceolate, fleshy, pointed at the end, they are 3.7 centimeters long. The petals are keeled and scaled on the outside with sharp edges. The lip is 3.3 centimeters slightly shorter than the other petals. It is clearly three-lobed, the side lobes are turned up and fused with the column to form a tube. The middle lobe is square in outline and strongly wavy on the edge. Thickened, curled veins run along the lip, and in the middle sits a tuft of hairy scales. The club-shaped column becomes 2.5 centimeters long, it is hairy on the underside.

distribution

Vanilla columbiana is only known from Colombia. Portères indicates an occurrence on the Río Magdalena .

Botanical history

This orchid was described by Robert Allen Rolfe in 1896 . The type specimen is incomplete, the description is probably based on a bud that has not yet blossomed. The assignment of newer collections to Vanilla columbiana is therefore uncertain. Soto Arenas and Cribb place them in the relationship of Vanilla pompona , with Vanilla calyculata , Vanilla grandiflora , Vanilla pseudopompona and Vanilla vellozii as further related species.
