Vanilla nigerica is a species of plant in the genus Vanilla ( Vanilla ) in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It grows as a climbing plant in West Africa.

description

Vanilla nigerica is an evergreen climber with a warty shoot. The leaves are 15 to 25 inches long and 3.5 to 4.5 inches wide. The leaf shape is narrow oval to linear, the leaf base is rounded, the petiole is about 1.5 centimeters long, the leaf ends long and drawn out.

The inflorescence bears is unbranched, two to seven inches long, it bears about six flowers . The bracts are oval, slightly pointed, about 0.4 inches long. Sepals and petals are white, about four inches long and 1.5 to two inches wide. They are oval shaped and almost blunt. The three centimeter long lip is bulbous in the lower half, the front edge is wavy. It is white with pink stripes. The blade is covered with two calluses and densely hairy at the base. The column is two centimeters long and the lower half is fused with the lip.

distribution

Vanilla nigerica occurs in West Africa in southern Nigeria and in Cameroon . It grows in the tropical rainforest and is probably quite rare.

Systematics and botanical history

Vanilla nigerica was first described by Alfred Barton Rendle in 1913 .

Within the genus Vanilla , Vanilla nigerica is classified in the subgenus Xanata and there in the section Thetya , which contains all species of the Paleotropic . According to Portères , Vanilla nigerica is similar to other African species such as Vanilla chalotii , Vanilla seretii, and Vanilla imperialis . Soto Arenas and Cribb name only Vanilla chalotii and Vanilla seretii as related species.
