Vasantraodada (Vasantdada) Patil ( Marathi वसंतराव दादा पाटील ; born November 13, 1917 in Padmale, Princely State of Sangli , British India ; † March 1, 1989 ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), which, among other things, between 1977 and 1978 and again from 1983 to 1985 Chief Minister of Maharashtra and then between 1985 and 1987 Governor of Rajasthan .

Life

Patil, son of Banduji Bapuji Patil, worked as a farmer after attending school. In 1952 he was elected as a candidate for the Indian National Congress (INC) to be a member of the legislative assembly of Madhya Pradesh and was a member of it until 1957. In addition, he was between 1952 and 1963 chairman of the committee for the marketing of agricultural products in the Sangli district . In addition, he was active as chairman of various other organizations such as the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Mills, the Indian export company of the sugar industry. After the establishment of the state of Bombay from parts of Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 1956, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Bombay between 1957 and 1960. After the establishment of the state of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960, he became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra and was a member of it until 1967. In 1965 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan , the third highest Indian civil order after the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan .

Patil was involved in the Indian National Congress (INC) for many years and was, among other things, President of the INC in the Sangli District, Secretary General, Vice President and finally President of the INC in Maharashtra for five years. In 1969 he was also chairman of the INC's reception committee in Bombay . In 1972 Patil was again a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, of which he was a member until 1977. At the same time he was Minister for Irrigation of this state between April 1972 and February 1976 . As the successor to Shankarrao Chavan , he was Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the first time on April 1, 1977 and held this office until July 17, 1978, after which he was replaced by Sharad Pawar . At the same time he was between May 1978 and March 1979 a member of the Legislative Council of Maharashtra, the upper house of this state.

In the elections of January 3 and 6, 1980 , Patil was elected a member of Lok Sabha , the lower house of the parliament of India , and represented the Sangli constituency in Maharashtra . On February 2, 1983, he succeeded Babasaheb Bhosale for the second time as Chief Minister of Maharashtra and remained in this position until June 1, 1985, after which Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar took over on June 2, 1985. Most recently he was on November 20, 1985 as the successor to Dwarka Prasad Gupta Governor of Rajasthan and held this office until his replacement by Jagdish Sharan Verma .

His marriage to Shalini V. Patil had three sons and two daughters.
