Karl Wilhelm Gustav von Cosel (born February 25, 1789 in Goldap , † March 1, 1876 in Schwedt / Oder ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

origin

His great-grandfather was the Prussian major general Johann Kaspar von Cosel , his grandfather Johann Karl von Cosel (1707–1765), commandant of Draheim. His father was the fourth son of the commandant Friedrich von Cosel (1750-1810) and his wife Karoline, née von Egidy (1767-1805). His father was a Prussian major in the "von Suter" hussar regiment . Major General Dietrich Christoph Gotthold von Cosel was his uncle. Two other uncles died in the First Coalition War . Karl Ludwig as major in the “von Knobelsdorff” infantry regiment in the battle of Kaiserslautern and Friedrich Georg Leopold († 1793) as prime lieutenant of the artillery during the siege of Mainz .

Military career

In 1802 Cosel came as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Schöning" of the Prussian army . At the end of October 1805 he joined the cavalry as a cornet and was employed in the “von Prittwitz” hussar regiment. Wounded in the Battle of Heilsberg during the Fourth Coalition War , Cosel still fought in the battle of Königsberg and in the Battle of Prussian Eylau . On June 18, 1807 he received the order Pour le Mérite and on August 16, 1807 Cosel was promoted to second lieutenant . On December 20, 1808 he was transferred to the 2nd Leib-Hussar Regiment and on September 3, 1811 to the Normal Dragoons Squadron. There he was promoted to Premier Lieutenant on February 16, 1812 and appointed adjutant to Colonel von Hünerbein . As such, Cosel took part in the Russian campaign on the side of France in 1812 .

On March 12, 1813 he became staff assistant master and came as an adjutant to Colonel von Bockum-Dolffs . On July 27, 1813, he was already captain and adjutant to General von Röder. During the Wars of Liberation Cosel was wounded in the battle near Haynau by a stab in the arm and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. His brigade chief Bockum-Dollfs fell, however. As the war continued, Cosel took part in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen and Ligny . In Kulm he was again wounded and for his behavior at Waterloo awarded the Iron Cross First Class.

On March 30, 1815 he was transferred to the General Staff to General von Katzler . On March 30, 1818, he was transferred as a commander to the 1st Uhlan Regiment and on November 29, 1821 he came as a commander in the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment . On March 30, 1822 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel with a patent from April 6, 1822 and to colonel on March 30, 1826 with a patent from April 4, 1826. In this capacity, Cosel was also a member of the Commission for the Revision of Military Laws from May 4, 1827, before he was transferred to the War Ministry on March 30, 1829 . This was followed from June 1, 1832 to December 10, 1835 as commander of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade . On March 30, 1834 he was awarded the Order of St. John and on March 30, 1835 promoted to major general. Cosel received the Russian Order of Saint Stanislaus I Class at the end of September 1835 and on December 11, 1835 he was re- inspected with an allowance of 500 thalers. He was an excellent horse connoisseur and had a lot of influence on the remont industry. On March 30, 1839, Cosel received the rank and fees of a division commander. When War Minister Gustav von Rauch fell ill at the beginning of 1840 , Cosel was appointed as his deputy and on March 30, 1840, he was transferred to the War Ministry as director of the military and economics department. In 1841 he had to represent the minister again and received a bonus of 100 Friedrichsdor . On March 22, 1843 Cosel was promoted to lieutenant general and on September 26, 1843 he was awarded the Order of St. Anna 1st Class. On the occasion of the festival of the Order, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with Oak Leaves on January 18, 1846 , and on May 9, 1848 Cosel was put up for disposition with the statutory pension .

After his departure, Cosel received the crown to the order Pour le Mérite on January 13, 1857 and on December 23, 1860 he was given the character of general of the cavalry. He died on March 1, 1876 in Schwedt / Oder and was buried there too.

family

Cosel married on June 6, 1814 in Fort Friedrichsburg near Königsberg i. Pr. Johanna Luise Charlotte von Auer (1795–1831). She was buried in the garrison cemetery on November 26, 1831. After the death of his first wife, Cosel married on October 22, 1833 in Hammer (Wohlau district) Asta von Schkopp (1802–1880), the second daughter of Colonel a. D. von Schkopp. The following children emerged from the marriages:
