Dietrich Christoph Gotthold von Cosel (born January 9, 1752 in Draheim , Neustettin district , † November 9, 1825 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and most recently in command of Graudenz .

Life

origin

His parents were Johann Karl von Cosel (* 1707; † 1765) and his wife Johanna Sophie, born von Arnim (* January 9, 1722; † January 3, 1803). His father was a Prussian colonel and commandant of Draheim . The Prussian Lieutenant General Johann Kaspar von Cosel was his great-grandfather.

Military career

On June 12, 1762 Cosel came to Berlin as a cadet . From there, on December 9, 1767, he joined the Hussar Regiment "von Lossow" of the Prussian Army as a Junker . He became a cornet on December 28, 1772 and second lieutenant on January 20, 1776 . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On May 28, 1790 Cosel rose to prime lieutenant and fought in the campaign in Poland in 1794 , where he distinguished himself in the battle near Jaktar. On February 3, 1795 he was staff assistant master and on April 17, 1800 Rittmeister and squadron chief . In the Fourth Coalition War , Cosel fought in the Battle of Heilsberg , where the regiment captured a French flag eagle .

After the war he became major on February 7, 1807 , on July 18, 1807 he was awarded the order Pour le Mérite for Heilsberg and on May 5, 1808 the Russian Order of St. George IV. Class. On December 20, 1808, Cosel was transferred to the newly formed 2nd Leib-Hussar Regiment and on April 8, 1811 was appointed its commander. On April 1, 1812, he then switched to the combined 1st Hussar Regiment as commander. He took part in the campaign of 1812 and on March 27, 1813 was appointed lieutenant colonel and commandant of Graudenz. There he was promoted to colonel on August 11, 1814 , on October 3, 1815, when he left, he was awarded the character of major general and a pension of 1000 thalers. But since no successor was appointed, Cosel remained in command of Graudenz for another two months. He died in Berlin on November 9, 1825 and was buried in the garrison cemetery on November 12, 1825 .

In the battle report on Heilsberg it says: In the battle of Heilsberg, Cosel commanded the two squadrons of the Prittwitz hussar regiment that took part in this battle and, according to the literal expression of the general of the cavalry von Bennigsen, covered himself with fame. With these two squadrons, Cosel not only made various attacks on French cavalry and threw them overboard, but also almost completely messed up a battalion of infantry

family

Cosel married Henriette Charlotte Poser (* 1767 - May 4, 1796) in 1791. The couple had the following children:

After the death of his first wife, he married Henriette Charlotte von Auer (born November 13, 1776, † April 29, 1853) on April 5, 1797 in Königsberg , a daughter of Major General Johann Kasimir von Auer . The couple had the following children:
