history

The original Vathia was located in a ravine northeast of the modern village. It was first mentioned in 1571 and was inhabited by pirates. In 1618 it was inhabited by 20 families. From the late 18th century until the beginning of the Greek Revolution in 1821 , a family feud led to a sharp decline in the population. Today's buildings go back to the time between 1840 and the beginning of the 20th century. In the early 20th century, the place lost its importance, so that in 1979 just eleven residents lived there permanently.

Residential towers in Vathia

The village of Vathia mostly consists of sparsely inhabited residential towers that are concentrated like a fortress on the tip of a rocky promontory not far from the Messenian Gulf. Some residential towers are used as holiday apartments. The picturesque location of the place is also an attraction for tourists.

Due to its special architectural value, the village was listed as a historical monument in 1976 and included by the Greek National Tourist Board (EOT) in the program for the preservation and development of traditional settlements under the direction of Aris Konstantinidis . Preservation and restoration measures were carried out on selected ensembles of residential towers, oil mills and other buildings, and they were converted into small hotels and guest houses.
