Association of German cave and karst researchers

The Association of German Cave and Karst Researchers ( VdHK ) is a German umbrella association of karst and cave researchers in matters of caves and karsts . 101 regional associations (especially cave associations ) and groups as well as six regional associations and over 500 individual members are members (as of 2013).

The main goals are the exploration and protection of caves and karst phenomena in Germany. Cave research in Germany is a voluntary activity that is supported by the commitment of the VdHK and its members. The focus is on the responsible handling of the natural area karst and cave. The association is non-profit .

The association was founded in Donauwörth in 1955 and has its headquarters in Munich . The association sees itself as the successor organization of the Main Association of German Speleologists (1922–1945) and the German Society for Karst Research (1947–1950).

The association is a member of the Union Internationale de Spéléologie and the German Nature Protection Ring . The association has been voting for the cave animal of the year since 2009 . Together with the Association of Austrian Speleologists, the association publishes the specialist publication Die Höhle - a magazine for karst and cave research .

The ethical guideline for cave protection is based on an initiative of the association.
