OZ is a German group of companies with the business fields of commercial printing (advertising supplements) and publishing house for special-interest magazines and books. The company's headquarters are in Rheinfelden (Baden) .

history

The company was founded in 1966 by Hanspeter Medweth (1931–2015) together with his wife Erika. In 1966, the trained textile engineer took over the management of the Oberrheinische Zeitung (OZ), which formerly appeared in Rheinfelden and belonged to his father-in-law Erich Krauseneck. He sold these to Südkurier GmbH in 1968 .

In 1968, Medweth founded the commercial printing company OZ Druck. In 1976, a publishing company was added as a second pillar and the company was merged to form OZ Druck & Verlags GmbH. Under the leadership of Erika Medweth, the publishing house was already publishing various handicraft and handicraft magazines. A year later, offset printing was introduced and the company portfolio was expanded to include a sales company for the magazines produced, today's BPV Medien Vertrieb GmbH & Co. KG. The company, located in downtown Rheinfeld, moved to a new building in the commercial area of ​​Oberrheinfelden in 1986.

In 1989 the company switched to web offset with a MAN Rotoman C and gradually switched from publishing to commercial printing. A second MAN Lithoman III web offset press was added in 1994, and a third one in 1999.

In 1996 it was split up into two independent sister companies, OZ Druck & Medien GmbH and OZ Verlag GmbH. In 1998 the company's two sons, Christian and Michael Medweth, took over the management. Christian Medweth runs the publishing house, Michael Medweth the printing company. As part of OZ-Verlag, a book publisher was founded in the same year , and the printing company introduced digital prepress .

In 2000 the publishing division took over Velber Verlag. In 2001, Living & More GmbH, Offenburg , was set up as a joint venture with the Weltbild publishing group . In 2003, TargetMedia AG (Switzerland) and Family Media GmbH , Freiburg im Breisgau , a joint venture with Axel Springer Verlag (including the titles Family & Co , Baby & Co , Playing and Learning ) followed.

In 2004 a new production and administration building was built and the fourth MAN Lithoman IV web offset system was installed. TargetMedia GmbH (Germany) was founded in 2005, and TargetMedia Polska Sp. Zoo was founded in 2007. In the same year, a TargetMedia sales office was opened in North Rhine-Westphalia and 74 percent of the outsourced web offset division of Kölnische Verlagsdruckerei GmbH was acquired. Since then, this has been called OZ Druck Köln KVD GmbH & Co. KG and recently achieved a turnover of around 16 million euros. Via the subsidiary targetmedia, WPS-RCM AG in Dietikon - the Swiss market leader in the production of commercial advertising (annual sales equivalent to 23 million euros) was taken over in autumn 2007 . With effect from January 1st, 2009 OZ Verlag bought the Christophorus handicraft publisher from the Kreuz-Verlag of the Herder publishing group . In July 2009, OZ Verlag took over the women's and youth magazines Popcorn , Jolie and Mädchen , which operated under the name Vision Media GmbH, as well as Springer's 50% share in the previous joint venture Family, from Axel Springer Mediahouse Munich, which is part of Axel Springer AG Media .

In mid-2018, OZ Druck had to file for bankruptcy.

Company data

The "Media Services" division produces advertising material for stationary retail. The focus is on food, furniture, electronics and hardware store chains. Approx. 30% are delivered to foreign customers (especially from Switzerland). Today, the publishing division is the leader in the German-speaking market for craft and creative magazines, and the world leader in classic handicrafts.

The largest sole proprietorship in the group is OZ Druck & Medien GmbH. In total, the group achieved a turnover of around 135 million euros in 2006. Almost half of this, 63 million euros, is generated by OZ Druck & Medien and “targetmedia”. The group as a whole employs around 360 people, almost half of them at OZ Druck & Medien and targetmedia. An average of 170 tons of paper are printed every day.

Awards

Company founder Hanspeter Medweth was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Business Medal in March 2007 . Michael Medweth was named Print Manager of the Year in October 2007 at the Druck & Medien Awards 2007, the industry award of the German printing industry given by the trade journal “Druck & Medien”. In addition, targetmedia received the award “Most Innovative Company”.
