Vello Salo (until 1945 real name Endel Vaher , born November 5, 1925 in Lalsi, Viljandi district , † April 21, 2019 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian theologian , translator and publisher .

Life

In 1943, when Estonia was occupied by Germany, Vello Salo left the high school graduation and went to Finland to fight against the Soviet Union in the ranks of the Finnish army . In 1944 he returned to Estonia and from there came to Germany as a (compulsorily recruited) member of the Wehrmacht .

In the academic year 1946/1947 he began studying mathematics and physics at the Université de Friborg , which he continued the following year at the University of Amsterdam . From 1948 he studied theology in Rome , from 1952 in Münster . He became well various theological degree and in 1976 with the (unpublished) work "Phoenician-Hebrew word pairs" in Rome to Dr. theol. PhD. In addition to the places of study mentioned, Salo also lived in Jordan (1964–1965), Iraq (1966–1969) and Sweden (1969–1970) before he moved to Toronto in 1976 . Since 1993 Salo lived again in Estonia, namely in Tartu , where he taught at the University of Tartu . He was a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1998 .

From 1948 to 1953 and again from 1961 to 1965 Salo was responsible for the Estonian-language broadcasts on Vatican Radio . In the meantime he worked as a priest in Germany , from 1966 to 1969 as Professor of the Old and New Testament at the "Séminaire Syro-Chaldéen de St. Jean" in Mosul , and since 1976 as Professor of the Old Testament at the University of Toronto . In numerous writings Salo dealt with the church and history in Estonia and the cultural and historical significance of the Christianization of Estonia.

Salo was also very active within the Estonian exile community. In 1962 he founded the “Maarjamaa” publishing house in Rome as a one-man company and took it with him when he moved to Canada in 1976 . Numerous culturally, historically and literarily important works have been published here, for example volumes of poetry by Ilona Laaman , Kalju Lepik and Uku Masing , Juhan Kurrik's English-language anthology of Estonian folklore or Alo Raun's small etymological dictionary.

Salo also edited various exile magazines and worked as a publicist and translator. At his suggestion, an anthology of Estonian poetry translated into Italian was published.
