Velma Middleton
Velma Middleton (born September 1, 1917 in St. Louis , Missouri , † February 10, 1961 in Freetown , Sierra Leone ) was an American jazz singer .
Live and act
Middleton began performing in nightclubs in the early 1930s before joining Connie McLean ’s Orchestra , with which she also toured in South America, and as a soloist in jazz in 1938. In 1942 she became a member of Louis Armstrong's band . Due to the recording ban , it was only documented on records with him from 1946 onwards. After Armstrong's Big Band broke up in 1947, she performed with Armstrong's All Stars . It was also used by him for comical numbers at his concerts. The duets with Armstrong will be remembered. B. That's My Desire, Baby It's Cold Outside or Big Butter and Egg Man . In 1952 she also recorded under her name for Duotone . She recorded two albums under her own name with Earl Hines in 1948 and Cozy Cole in 1952.
She died while on a tour of Africa with Armstrong.
